SIFNOS SERENADE
Alvaro Arteche
This project was conceived after spending two weeks in the greek island Sifnos during summer 2023. The idea of making a book was not planned before going, it was something that came afterwards while working with the images in the darkroom. It was then, the book sort of started to create itself.
This body of work captures the time spent there – a time that allowed Alvaro to deepen his connection with his surroundings in an unprecedented manner. The project became a visual diary of summer calmness and pure appretitation of the now, which was enabled in the unique setting of this beautiful island.
Tucked away in the Aegean Sea, Sifnos remains an undiscovered gem in the Cyclades, overshadowed by its flashier neighbors like Mykonos and Santorini.
Sifnos is a place where time stretches.
One could easily lose hours meandering through its terraced hills, dotted with olive groves and tiny chapels.
On the beaches, you might find yourself alone, save for a few fishing boats bobbing in the distance.
As night falls, the island is cloaked in a tranquil darkness, interrupted only by the twinkling lights of the villages scattered across the hillsides. Sifnos offers no nightlife to speak of—no thumping clubs or crowded bars—but this is its allure.
It is a place where one comes to disconnect, to experience the quiet rhythms of island life that have persisted for centuries.
