WOMEN OF FIRE
Claudia Revidat
Claudia Revidat’s Women of Fire series, launched in 2022, is a profound exploration of strength and beauty, focusing on the Mursi women of Ethiopia. This photographic project highlights the resilience of these women, who live in the Omo Valley—a region steeped in history and rich in cultural traditions. The Mursi, one of Ethiopia’s most iconic tribes, counts around 11,500 people. They are pastoralists known for their deep connection to cattle, which serve not only as a source of sustenance but also as a cultural touchstone.
One of the unique aspects of Mursi culture is their intricate system of color classification, based on the diverse coats of their cattle. This poetic practice extends beyond mere observation, forming a language that encapsulates their worldview. Claudia draws inspiration from this tradition, using layers of color and texture to convey the emotional depth of her portraits.
The series captures a delicate interplay of strength and vulnerability. The floral tattoos and clay-adorned skin of the women symbolize their connection to nature, highlighting a fragile harmony between humanity and the environment.
In Women of Fire Claudia Revidat experiments with layering, remixing, and manipulating. The result is a unique and vivid imagery that reflects the complexity of the reality she represents.
