MERIDA
Cornelius Kaess
Founded in 1542 by Spanish conquistador Francisco de Montejo, Mérida was built atop the ancient Mayan city of T’Hó, whose ruins provided stones for the city’s colonial structures. The city was named after Mérida, Spain, due to similarities in the architecture.
Before the Spanish arrival, T’Hó was a major Mayan settlement in the Yucatán Peninsula. Following its conquest, Mérida became a colonial stronghold, marked by grand churches and mansions that reflected its importance.
German photographer Cornelius Kaess plays his magic through the city’s vibrant streets and markets, framing in iconic compositions the daily life of Yucatan people.
