ARBORETUM

Frederik Vercruysse

In a reflection on the interplay between natural and artificial, Frederik Vercruysse fascination with the ever-changing seasons serves as a starting point for a deeper exploration into the grandeur and complexity of the botanical world. In his latest personal project Vercruysse captures not only the aesthetic beauty of plants but also the profound relationship between humankind and the natural environment.

The multitude of plant species, with their diverse forms and functions, sparks a contemplation on our innate desire to catalog and collect. Representating the Arboretum Kalmthout becomes a meditation on the botanical garden as both an oasis of peace and a living museum—a curated sanctuary where nature is nurtured yet restrained, displayed yet preserved.

The project resonates with a sense of reverence, highlighting the subtle beauty of the natural world while questioning our role as its stewards. Through his lens, Frederik invites the viewer to pause, reflect, and appreciate the intricate dance between the forces of nature and the hand of man, captured in a moment of stillness and grace.
