HOMECOMING

Tirtha Lawati
HOMECOMING develops an investigation on identity, in between the instance of returning home and the delicate complexities of growing up Nepali in Britain. Through a series of tender and evocative portraits, taken both in the UK and in Nepal, Lawati explores the collective struggles and triumphs of first-generation Nepali youths navigating the cultural chasm between their parents’ traditions and British society.
Forced to mature quickly upon their arrival, young Nepalis often bore the weight of supporting older family members, bridging language barriers, and meeting high cultural expectations. This pressure left little room for their inner child to flourish.
Homecoming creates space for these displaced dreams, using playful and intimate compositions to reimagine the childhoods shaped by intergenerational trauma and cultural displacement.

Nepali-British photographer based in Rugby-London, UK.
Tirtha Lawati was born in Nepal and raised in Britain. He grew up across a number of counties—Kent, North Yorkshire, and Warwickshire—before studying photography at Warwickshire College, and then fashion photography at London College of Fashion. His editorials published in Vogue Italia and Dazed narrate fashion collections designed by his peers, of models at ease in clothes worn with confidence; but his own portfolio documents the tentative experience of first-generation Asian youth in the UK, suspended between the worldview of their parents and the accommodation of British values.
